Hair care for long-lasting weft extensions

Posted on

If you've bought weft hair extensions online to give you the full and fabulous head of hair you desire, then you will want to learn how to care for them. Looking after them carefully will extend the life of your hair extensions and keep them looking naturally fantastic for longer. By doing this you will also take care of your natural hair, avoiding problems in the future.

Wash with care

Make sure to wash your extensions only when they need it. Your natural hair is nourished and moisturised by oils from your scalp, meaning it can better resist heat or chemical damage. Weft hair extensions are cut off from this natural oil supply, so  they don't have the same resistance to regular washing as your natural hair. When buying your weft hair extensions online, make sure to also find the best shampoo and conditioner for them, as this choice is important. Make sure to buy sulphate-free products, as sulphates strip hair, making it more brittle and susceptible to damage.

Brush often...

Gently brushing your hair at least twice a day will help remove the 50 to 150 hairs that women lose each day. If they aren't removed regularly, they can tangle and matt your hair extensions, damaging the hair on the weft and making it more difficult to remove your extensions when the time comes.

...With the right tools

Choose your combs and brushes carefully. A wide toothed comb can help to deal with large tangles, but a narrow toothed comb should be used only on smaller tangles, making sure to not pull with great force. A looper brush will be one of your best tools for your hair extensions, as it will allow you to brush your hair without loosening the extensions from your natural hair. A natural bristled broad brush is your final tool. This can be used to smooth your hair and give a good finish, but it's important to make sure any large knots are removed first.

Beware the hair bonds!

If you're using tape hair extensions take extra care with the bonds. Try to avoid getting conditioner on them and make sure to skip the area with your straightener or curling iron, as the bonds are easily damaged by chemicals or heat.

Hair can easily tangle and mat overnight. Reduce the risk of this by gently styling your hair into a loose plait or wrap a silk scarf over your hair. Sleeping on a satin or silk pillowcase will also reduce overnight tangles.

Put thought into how you look after your hair extensions and you'll get the most bang for your buck. If you have any queries or concerns about how to do this, either contact your hairdresser or discuss with your weft hair extension supplier.
